Acne can be caused by external factors. Ask yourself whether you’re using too much oily product, whether your makeup bag is clean, how often you’re changing your sheets, whether your phone is dirty, whether you’re using too much hair product, whether you’re not washing makeup off properly before going to bed, overusing products or changing products too rapidly.

Acne can also be caused by internal factors, like stress, medications, consuming fatty food, going off birth control, nursing, pregnancy or high-intensity workouts. The skin can act out, because that’s the final toxin-releasing organ. Start by narrowing down the changes you’ve made, and then figure out if you need to change your diet. If you’re coming off of birth control pills, you’ll need 6 to 7 months before your skin starts clearing up. If you’re experiencing under-the-skin congestion–blackheads or whiteheads–it has to be extracted.

Come for a free consultation. Our aestheticians will put you on a plan and make at-home recommendations. Everybody thinks acne will go away on its own, but facials will speed up the process. If the causes are internal, you can try facials and products, but if there’s an issue with your oil glands, we would recommend seeing a dermatologist for medication or medical solutions.

Blemish-Prone Skin

Prevention is always better than cure and clients should be encouraged to target every pimple that starts to develop by applying the

DEFINITION:
Blemishes or problem skin starts in the area surrounding the hairs that grow from the skin, known as the pilosebaceous follicle. These follicles become plugged with dead skin cells and oil, eventually leading to congestion and breakouts. The most commonly affected areas are the face, neck, back, chest and shoulders.

WHAT ARE THE VISIBLE SIGNS OF BREAKOUT-PRONE SKIN?

• Redness
• Comedones (blackheads)
• Papules
• Pustules
• Nodules
• Scarring

DID YOU KNOW…

Accumulation of sebum converts a microcomedone into a closed comedone (whitehead).
• The follicular orifice enlarges over time, forming an open comedone (blackhead).
• An inflammatory pustule develops when the follicular contents rupture into the surrounding dermis, producing a superficial papule, deeper pustule, or even deeper nodule, depending on the level of rupture.

The different types of acne scars are:

Ice pick scars – Deep pits with sharp edges that are the most common type of scarring.
• Box car scars – Angular scars that usually occur on the temple and cheeks, and can either be superficial or deep.
• Rolling scars – Scars that give the skin a wave-like or cobblestone appearance.
• Hypertrophic scars – Thickened or keloid scars.

A: Healthy skin

1. In this first image, you will see healthy skin layers and skin cells.

2. You will notice healthy sebaceous glands with no blemishes.

B: Breakout-prone skin

1. Hyperkeratosis, which is the excessive production of the stratum corneum, causes plugs to develop in the follicles.

2. Androgens increase during puberty, causing enlarged sebaceous glands, making more sebum.

blemish-prone-skin.png

3. Stress can also stimulate the release of certain hormones that cause more sebaceous secretions.

4. The combination of increased sebum production and hyperkeratinisation results in the formation of a hyper keratotic plug composed of a mixture of sebum and keratin.

5. The comedone itself is hardened, waxy and stuck to the side walls of the follicle.

6. As a result, the sebum produced in the sebaceous gland lower down cannot get to the surface and starts to build up in the gland.

7. This shows up as a nodule that can become quite large but not inflamed.

8. Propionibacterium proliferates and inflammation develops.

9. Inflammation of the area surrounding the sebaceous gland is now more visible.

10. This presents as an inflamed nodule.

We recommend vitamin A for healthy skin, then we target the skin condition.

As all people everywhere suffer from a vitamin A deficiency, replenishing the vitamin A levels in the skin is the most important first step.

The Environ Skin Care philosophy is before you can address the specific skin condition, you first have to ensure that the skin has been normalized so that it is receptive to any  add-on products meant to target the skin condition.

Vitamin A is the normalizing factor that helps to create healthy-looking and resilient skin.

After the skin has been normalized through the use of the Vitamin STEP-UP SYSTEM™, the skin condition can be addressed with specially formulated add-on products that specifically target the visible signs of ageing.
